How MKO Abiola Signed His Own Death Warrant!

-Wole Adejumo
Basorun MKO Abiola meant different things to many people across Nigeria and beyond. To some, he was a man whose business empire ensured the daily bread of many families. From the philanthropic angle, Abiola was the man who provided lifelines to many. He was not Africa’s Pillar of Sports for nothing; his football club contributed quite a number of regulars to Nigeria’s national soccer team, the Super Eagles back then. Politically too, he is today seen as a martyr, one of the heroes of Nigeria’s democracy. No wonder his death on July 7, 1998 raised a lot of dust in the country.
Fifteen years after, his

NGF Election: A 2015 Epicedium!

The recently held Nigerian Governors’ Forum election and the subsequent recognition given to a faction of the NGF by the President has shown that the country’s democracy is on the brink. Though President Goodluck Jonathan’s aides have stated that he had no vested interest in the election, not many Nigerians are convinced.
The whole exercise, which has started playing out like a tragicomedy might just reach a crescendo in 2015. By then,

The Man Who Saw Tomorrow!

For some time now, Yorubas from the South Western Nigeria have been crying about being marginalized in the scheme of things as far as running Nigeria is concerned. As it stands, most agencies of government do not have Yorubas among the top officials. Only very few agencies are headed by Yorubas presently.
Incidentally, back in 2004, a prophet had spoken of things to come, Prophet Wale Olagunju of the Divine Seed of God in Ojoo, Ibadan had prophesied that Yorubas would be marginalized by a government that would come after the one led by Chief Obasanjo.

Ogun Police Denies Parading 2-Month Old Baby As Crime Suspect!

The Ogun State Police Command has refuted claims being made over the social media that a two-month old baby was paraded along with his parents who are robbery suspects. The police authorities in the state made their position clear via a statement signed by the command's spokesman, Mr Muyiwa Adejobi. The statement reads inter alia: "The attention of the Ogun State Police Command has been drawn to the news of the arrest/parade of a 2month old baby widely circulated on social network and some newspapers recently. The Command wishes to state categorically that the news was untrue as the woman, one Mrs Adeosun and her baby were not paraded during the Commissioner’s press briefing held on 11th March 2013 at the State Headquarters Eleweran Abeokuta as claimed by the reporter who was not even present at the briefing. However, to set the records straight, the woman, Mrs Adeosun, is a self-confessed armourer to an armed robbery syndicate from whom 1 pump action and 1 cut-to-size single barrel guns and ammunition were recovered.? The woman, her husband and other members of the robbery syndicate have confessed to series of robbery operations and killings of more than five (5) citizens of this country during their various operations. The woman was arrested for her involvement in criminal acts, interrogated by the Police and subsequently granted bail on compassionate ground to enable her continue taking care of her two (2) months old baby pending her arraignment in court with the other suspects. Since then, she has been in her house with the baby. The arrest of the woman and her husband has so far assisted the Police in recovery of additional four (4) stolen vehicles. The Command is mindful of the respect for fundamental human rights and dignity of individuals and will not in any way act contrary to the ongoing reform agenda in the Nigeria Police Force by the Federal government. The Command hereby urges the general public to disregard the news as totally false, baseless, mischievous and a calculated attempt to distract the Police from going after other members of the gang who are still at large. While assuring the general public of the Command’s commitment to redouble its efforts in service to humanity, the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State, CP Ikemefuna Okoye ,fdc, reassures the general public of adequate protection and safety of lives and property in Ogun State".

Ode To A Worthy Principal: The S.A Omowon We Never Knew!

We all gathered at the Old Hall as part of our orientation as new students of Ibadan Boys High School. Some of the teachers we dreaded were there. Who would ever forget Mr Ogunwusi, the orientation coordinator? A dark, short man. He flogged mercilessly when annoyed. He started the unique system of putting us in classes in alphabetical order. Those of us whose surnames start with A counted ourselves lucky, we made up the A, B and C arms of the new JS 1. While we gathered at the Old Hall, with some not getting sitting spaces, and in came Mr Omowon, the Principal.
After taking us through the school anthem, he made sure we all had typewritten copies of all the stanzas. He had observed that while the senior students sang on the assembly ground, all we did was watch in amazement.
